Toronto dropped a 7-10 decision to the 2023 Major League Baseball Cleveland Cavaliers at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Monday (Aug. 28). A four-run blowout in the 11th inning of extra innings was the difference.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 20th home run of the season in the first inning, but Toronto gave up two runs in the third and fourth innings. After a scoreless first and second inning, starter Yusei Kikuchi gave up a tiebreaking two-run homer to Jose Ramirez in the third, then gave up two more runs on four hits in the fourth. Kikuchi was charged with four runs on six hits (one homer) and two walks in six innings, striking out eight.
Toronto didn’t go down easy either. After taking a one-run lead in the fourth inning on George Springer’s 17th solo home run of the season, the Jays rallied to make it 5-4 in the sixth. Rookie Davis Schneider hit a walk-off two-run homer over the left field fence. His fifth of the season.
But the bullpen couldn’t protect the lead. In the eighth inning, reliever Tim Maiza came on but gave up back-to-back singles to make it a 6-5 Cleveland lead. Toronto rallied to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth on a Schneider double and a Dalton Bashaw RBI single, but it wasn’t enough.
Cleveland broke the tie in the 11th inning with Cole Calhoun’s RBI double off Toronto reliever Jay Jackson, putting runners on second and third. Ramon Loreano followed with a two-run homer to cap a four-run big inning. Toronto scored a run in the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield, but it wasn’t enough to put the game away.

The loss snapped a three-game losing streak for Toronto, which was led by Ryu Hyun-jin, who allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings in Cleveland the day before. With a 1-4 record in their last five games, Toronto is now 71-60 and 2.5 games behind the Houston Astros (74-58) for the third wild-card spot in the American League.
To make matters worse, they’ve been hit with injuries. Starting shortstop Bo Bissett, who was removed from the game in the fifth inning after a grounder to second base, appeared to have a strained right quadriceps. The other injury came just eight days after he recovered from patellar tendinitis in his right knee on April 20.
Starting third baseman Matt Chapman was also removed from the lineup in the sixth inning in favor of pinch-hitter Merrifield. Inflammation in his right middle finger was the reason for the change, which was the result of a cut on his finger by an instrument during weight training.
Toronto is now 12-12 in the month of August since Ryu’s return from injury. If you take out the five games where Ryu went 4-1, they are 7-11. Without the Ryu effect, there are red flags in the fall baseball battle. /waw@osen.co.kr
